More on NRECA & Renewable Energy

Electric cooperatives across the country are actively expanding their fuel portfolios to include an array of renewable sources, including wind, solar, geothermal, biomass, manure and hydro.

This web-based map provides an overview of co-op owned and purchased power from renewable energy sources.

  • In 2008, co-ops received over 11 percent of their power from renewable sources, as compared to 9 percent for the nation’s entire electric utility sector.

  • Nationwide, co-ops own 554 MW in renewable energy generation and have purchased contracts for 1946 MW for a combined total of 2500 MW. This is in addition to the roughly 10 GW of preference power contracts with Federal hydroelectric facilities.

The map illustrates the importance of Clean Renewable Energy Bonds in boosting the ability of co-ops to develop substantial renewable energy projects. More than three dozen co-ops applied for and received CREB bonding authority.
