Annual Energy Outlook 2006 with Projections to 2030 (Early Release) - Overview: Electricity Generation (Energy Information Administration)

Coal is a vital natural resource and coal fired electricity generation is the core of the U.S. economy with an estimated 60 percent of GDP due to enterprises using electricity as their energy source. More than 90 percent of the coal consumed in the United States is used to generate electricity.  It fuels more than half the nation’s generation and will continue as the largest single source of electricity supply through 2030 and beyond.

Clean coal technologies (CCT) will provide more efficient and environmentally compatible electricity generation to meet the dramatic rise in electricity demand over the next 25 years.
