Arlington, Virginia, SEPTEMBER 18, 2009 – In a national ranking of best employers for workers over fifty, AARP ranked the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) fifth in the country.
NRECA has moved up from the 2008 ranking of 27th, now joining Cornell University, First Horizon National Corporation, National Institutes of Health and the YMCA of Greater Rochester topping the “2009 Best Employers for Workers Over Fifty.”
AARP pointed to NRECA’s defined benefits plan, alternative work arrangements and the high percentage of older workers employed in explaining the ranking:
“This year, the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) makes its second consecutive appearance on AARP's list of the Best Employers for Workers Over 50. NRECA offers employees a benefits package that includes perks like free preventive-care exams. Employees can also choose from a number of alternative-work arrangements, ranging from flextime to the ability to telework up to three days per week. Currently, 37 percent of NRECA's workforce is age 50+, with an average tenure of 11.8 years.”
The entire list of 2009 winners is available on AARP’s Web site, along with highlights of why NRECA was selected.
“NRECA is proud to be recognized by the AARP for the second straight year as being one of the best employers for workers over 50,” said Glenn English, NRECA CEO. “Ranking fifth in this year's list validates what we strive to do; value all our employees throughout their time at NRECA as new hires through retirement.”
NRECA represents the nation’s more than 900 private, consumer-owned electric cooperatives, which provide electric service to more than 42 million people in 47 states.
